James Guppy is a contemporary Australian artist who takes his influence from Western figurative painting and surrealism. His work simultaneously explores the absurdity of everyday life whilst also evoking questions about the ideas Western society holds most sacred: love, gender sexuality and identities. Guppy’s work seeks to undo established symbols of beauty by transforming how bodies are viewed. Guppy’s work stretches the physicality of what human bodies can do by positioning them into taboo scenes or pairing them with seemingly nonsensical animals and objects. Guppy is also transfixed by flowers and the elements. Guppy’s vision is one that rearranges the mundane into a landscape of lucid dreaming. Guppy lives in a small coastal town in New South Wales.
